Monday, December 30th, 2013 - Evening Weather Discussion

Well, this forecast was worthy of a special edition title to it, as it is one of the craziest I have ever had the pleasure of producing.  It is very cold forecast, with two storms that have the potential to become blizzards for someone in the Northeastern United States.  Can you imagine?  Someone in the Northeastern United States is likely to get 2 back to back blizzards within 3 days.  Will it be us?  It could be, but we might be spared on the 2nd one, maybe.  I am not sure yet how the second one will work out.  That one can be rain or snow.  The way it is right now with the second one we will be right on the dividing line.  But first, two storms will merge near the Middle Atlantic Coast on Thursday night and it looks as if this is an absolutely classic set-up for a blizzard for us and New England.  I am not certain yet that this storm will quite make it to blizzard classification, but it definitely has that potential.  The snow should commence lightly in the pre-dawn hours on Thursday, and continue lightly throughout the day, possibly accumulating to an inch or two by Thursday evening.  Then on Thursday evening the two storms will start to combine forces, become an intense Nor'easter that has the possibility of attaining blizzard classification by Friday morning as it intensifies off the coast and moves eastward to the south of Long Island.  The snow will be heaviest late on Thursday night through Friday morning when travel may become nearly impossible.  In addition, winds may gust over 40 mph, especially in eastern sections.  This would lead to blowing and drifting of the snow as well, as the snow should be of the light and fluffy variety, as the cold air will start to pour in by Friday morning.  The snow should start to taper off by late morning on Friday after as much as a foot or more has fallen throughout our area.  The temperatures will fall to and remain in the low to mid teens during the day on Friday, then drop to the mid to low single digits BELOW ZERO by Saturday morning and a high only in the mid teens on Saturday even though it will be sunny.  Then on Sunday another storm may approach, and believe it or not the European model is saying that this storm has the potential to be even stronger than the first one!  I am not certain of this storm yet at all, but I am leaning towards it.  It appears that we will be on the dividing line between rain and snow with this storm. It will all depend upon the exact track that this storm takes.  To the east of the track temperatures will be in the 50’s and to the west of the track the temperatures will be in the teens and 20’s.  I created this forecast as rain or snow due to the uncertainty and went down the middle with the temperatures.  Keep in mind that regardless, if this storm is really as strong as the European is model is showing, the winds would likely gust to 50 mph or more and if it is rain we would be dealing with some serious flooding, followed by an incredible flash freeze.  If it is all snow, we would be dealing with a problem of where to even put it all.  It would bury us.  After this storm passes, incredibly cold air will return, with lows possibly dropping to near 10 degrees BELLOW ZERO, and the highs possibly only reaching the mid to upper single digits next Tuesday.  Then we will have yet another chance for snow next Thursday and Friday, and then again the following Tuesday.  This winter is setting up to be the worst I have seen in 20 years, since the winter of 1993-1994.  Check back in the morning for the latest in this saga and please tell all of your friends, family, relatives, neighbors, and unknown people that you have never met before, about this blog.  Thank you.
