Tuesday, January 21st, 2014 - Evening Weather Discussion

Well, this storm turned out to be everything I thought it could be many days ago.  I said that it had blizzard potential, especially for Eastern Long Island and Eastern New England.  Blizzard Warnings were posted today for Eastern Massachusetts and near-blizzard conditions are being experienced from New Jersey, across Long Island and through the rest of Eastern New England.  Some areas are likely to receive up to 15 inches of snow.  Moving forward, The Edge Weather Data Analysis System has determined that there is a chance of a very significant snowstorm toward the middle to end of next week.  Right now the threat is appearing to be near the end of that window for Thursday night into Friday, but this threat could move up to as soon as Tuesday night into Wednesday, depending on how things develop.  First though, the snow will end tonight from west to east between 10 pm and midnight.  Total snowfall accumulations will likely range from 3-6 inches in far Northwest New Jersey to 10-18 inches in Central New Jersey and far Northeast New Jersey and 6-10 inches between.  Moving forward temperatures will drop to around zero by morning, then rise to only the low teens.  Then on Thursday afternoon a weak disturbance will bring us a bit of light snow in the afternoon that could accumulate a dusting to a half of an inch or so.  Low temperatures will again drop to near zero on Friday morning. On Saturday a bit stronger disturbance will approach our area, bringing more light snow that could accumulate to an inch or possibly two in some locations. Temperatures will likely drop to the low single digits on Sunday morning.  Another weak disturbance will approach on Sunday night and Monday, giving us yet another chance at an inch or so of snow.  Next Tuesday and Wednesday mornings temperatures will again drop to near zero with highs in the low teens next Tuesday and the mid teens next Wednesday.  On Tuesday and Wednesday it is possible we could actually have a couple of nice days!  Would't that be nice for a change?  Well, don't enjoy it too much because next Thursday night and Friday two disturbances may approach our area, one dropping down from Canada and one coming from the Southeastern United States.  These storms may very well combine into a powerful Nor'easter near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina next Thursday night.  This storm would then track due north along the coast while intensifying into a strong Nor'easter.  This would bring us the chance for a significant snowstorm next Thursday night and Friday.  A couple of things with this storm.  One is that it could develop up to two days earlier, possibly as early as Tuesday night, and of course it could take a track further off the coast, missing us completely.  However, at this moment in time, The Edge Weather Data Analysis System has determined that this is currently a very real threat for our next significant snowstorm.  After this potential passes it still appears that there could be yet another storm for next Saturday night into Sunday morning, however there is still much uncertainty with whether this would be a snow threat or rain threat for Super Bowl Sunday.  Check back for updates.

  1. The Edge Weather Data Analysis System? Did you launch your own satellite over the weekend?
