Thursday, December 18, 2014 - Evening Weather Discussion

For those of you who were really hoping for some snow for Christmas or who depend upon it for a living or who like to ski.  Well, I have nothing good to say for you.  We had what looked like two really good opportunities for significant snow over the past couple of weeks, but neither of those worked out and there is nothing on the horizon whatsoever.  What had looked to be shaping up as a really bad winter is now looking like not much of a winter at all.

Something changed drastically with the weather pattern recently, no doubt about it.  The storm a couple of weeks ago should not have been freezing rain and there should have been a storm coming this weekend and there is not.  Something changed, and it has changed in a way that simply does NOT favor snow.  This certainly can change, but that is how it looks at the moment.

We will have variably cloudy skies through Sunday with just a chance of a flurry this weekend.

Monday the storm that was supposed to hit on Saturday night and Sunday morning will approach from the south.  It will however warm up enough by then that it will fall as rain instead of snow. There is a slight chance that it could start as snow if it starts early enough in the morning before the warm air moves in, but in any event, any snow would be insignificant and it will change to rain.

We will then have a chance of showers on Tuesday.

Then on Wednesday a strong storm system will develop along the East Coast.  It will however take an inland path which will allow warm air to surge northward up along the East Coast and will bring us heavy rain on Christmas Eve morning, ending during the afternoon.  There will then be a chance of a snow shower for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

There will then a chance of rain next Friday night as a cold front approaches.

Then next Saturday through New Year's Day should be cold and mainly dry with just a chance of a snow shower from time to time off the Great Lakes.
