Just Sitting Back and Watching the Radar and Satellite in Amazement

This is one heck of a storm that is developing. It really is. The instability in the atmosphere is mesmerizing.  Watching the satellite and radar you can actually see the atmosphere bubbling with the instability.  It is truly amazing.

You know something, this is no joke what I am about to say. A few years ago when Northeastern NJ had its last major Nor'easter with 3 feet of snow, I saw some incredible bird activity, meaning I saw tens of thousands of birds gathering in a field prior to the models even showing the storm.  I mean I knew there was the possibility of something serious, but not one single model was showing anything yet. I thought to myself, "could they know something that we don't yet know?"  Then when I got home, yep, the models showed a blizzard coming our way, from nothing on the previous run.

Then a few days ago when I was driving home from work the same thing happened.  I saw literally tens of thousands of birds gathered in the corn fields and flying around like crazy.  I again thought to myself, is there a big storm coming?  Then a couple of days later the European model came up with our storm from nowhere. I do believe the birds knew something.

There has actually been some research on just such a case that appeared in the BBC in December. Click here to view the article.  I found it quite interesting.

I will be holding off on my evening forecast until the latest short-range data comes in around 9 pm.
