More Flooding Likely Today - Then a Chance of Snow on Sunday Night?
There was an inch of rain again in Northwest New Jersey overnight and there could be another inch of rain again today as showers and thunderstorms, possibly heavy, will likely develop again this afternoon, prior to clearing out tomorrow morning. The streams and rivers are already at very high levels in Northwest New Jersey, so any additional rain could produce flooding, which could be severe in some locations. Tomorrow morning and early afternoon the weather should be ok and there could even be some sun if we are lucky, and then showers and thunderstorms will develop again as the cold front finally approaches on Friday night. After the front passes on Friday night, the weather will become much cooler for the weekend, but it may not clear out much as an upper level low will drop down into our area from Canada. This upper level low will bring MUCH COOLER air with it for the weekend and very cold air high up in the atmosphere, which will produce instability in the atmosphere and therefore the possibility of showers and thunderstorms all weekend as it moves slowly through our area. As the upper level low is directly over Northern New Jersey on Sunday night it could make it cold enough in the upper levels of the atmosphere to produce a mixture of rain and wet snow in the higher terrain of Northern New Jersey on Sunday night. This would be a novelty feature and would certainly not produce any problems for anyone. It is just an interesting possibility. My wife reminded me that two years ago we did actually have accumulating snow here on grassy surfaces in Northwest New Jersey on September 30, so this is unusual, but not unheard of.
