The storm yesterday worked out pretty much as I expected,
with a couple of exceptions. One was
that the highest total I found in NJ was 4.8 inches in Flemington, Hunterdon
County. In addition, areas in extreme eastern
sections of Northern New Jersey only got 1-3 inches, so a better forecast would
have been 3-5 inches with 1-3 inches in far eastern sections, where
temperatures warmed up above freezing. The
storm behaved pretty much as expected, but a little warmer air did move in than
expected which kept the snow amounts down slightly from what they could have
been, especially in eastern sections. Moving
forward, there likely be a little light snow or flurries on New Year’s Eve,
which could bring a dusting of accumulation in some places. There may also be some light snow or flurries
on New Year’s Day, but even if there is, it may get above freezing during the
day, reducing the chances of any possible travel problems. Looking forward into next week, it still appears
as if it will get quite cold, but it does not look quite as cold as it did
yesterday. This cold air decreases the chances of the developing storms in the
Gulf of Mexico and along the East Coast of coming north into our area, likely
pushing them south and east and out to sea, but I still left a slight chance of
snow in the forecast on Friday and Saturday, just in case. Going into next week, a weak storm system may
approach our area next Monday, bringing the chance of some snow, but it may
also warm up next week.
