Saturday, March 9th, 2013 - Evening Weather Discussion

Some small changes to the forecast from this morning.  First of all, it reached 60 degrees at my location here today, and tomorrow will also be a beautiful day, although likely a few degrees colder than today.  Then Monday should be gorgeous with highs around 60.  Then Tuesday is likely to be a very rainy day as a cold front will pass through our area, bringing a chance of some rain or snow showers on Wednesday and snow showers on Thursday.  One big change to the forecast is that the Friday light snow chance has moved back to Saturday, with a second chance of a bit bigger storm on Sunday and Sunday night, and then my big Nor'easter chance starts on Tuesday.  It will be unseasonably cold from Thursday of next week through the end of the forecast period, so everything from Thursday on has a high likelihood of being snow.  It will just be a matter of how far north these storms make it.

I Just Received my Doctorate

I just received my Doctorate in Educational Leadership.  I want to thank everyone who participated in my research study and everyone who helped me out along the way.  After 6 years and a bazillion dollars, it is nice to finally be able to say, "Dr. C. Mark Edgerton II", or “Doctor Edge”, or “Doc Edge”, or “Dr. Edgerton”, or whatever.  Thanks to everyone who stood by be during this endeavor.  This was a truly grueling process which took an awful lot out of me mentally and physically, but it was something that I truly felt I needed to do for myself and my family.  And thanks to all of you who created this blog for me.  For those of you who don't already know, this blog was not my idea at all.  It was conceptualized and created by others who wanted an outlet for me to share my weather ideas and thoughts with all of you. I can't thank enough each and every one of the people who created this blog for me.  I also can't thank enough the people who read my blog.  I know I don't know many of you personally, but please know that I am thinking of each and every one of you every day when I produce my forecast.  I will continue to do the best job that I possibly can to bring you the best possible forecast.  Thanks to all of you.  Have a wonderful afternoon.  Bright blue sky, how nice is it?

Saturday, March 9th, 2013- Morning Weather Discussion

I still can’t get over how much snow Northeastern New Jersey got yesterday.  It was truly amazing.  I guess that I did say many days ago that we would get somewhere between nothing and a blizzard, and this is exactly what we got, nothing the first night, and then nearly a blizzard the second night, and I outlined this possibility of a slow moving and intense multi-day storm 19 days before it happened.  You are never going to get these things exactly correct, especially on such a minute scale, such as my forecast end time of around noon.  The snow ended at 12:30 at my location but went on until around 3:00-3:30 in Northeastern New Jersey as that band just would not budge, and western sections of New Jersey only received as little as 3.5 inches while other locations received almost a foot.  Sure, I wish I could have guessed the snowfall totals a bit better, but honestly at my location I was saying 2-4 inches a few days in advance while the major networks were saying nothing and we got 5 inches here, and the day when they were saying 6-12 inches and I was saying an inch, we got nothing.  So, overall I definitely got the idea right, I just missed on the very small-scale feature of that band setting up over Northeastern New Jersey and then simply not moving and more important, the intensity of that band, which no model was showing except the model that had already completely busted the night before.  Oh well, no one is perfect.  Anyway, moving forward, it will be beautiful through Monday with highs reaching the 50’s, then on Tuesday a cold front will move through our area, bringing with it some rain on Tuesday, and colder air behind it for the rest of the week.  Wednesday there will be a chance of rain or snow showers and a chance of snow showers on Thursday as showers are likely to develop off the Great Lakes.  Then on Friday we will have a chance of snow as a weak storm system approaches from the west.  This system has the potential to give us a dusting to an inch or two of snow during the day on Friday and possibly into Friday evening.  Then another weak storm system will approach on Saturday night, again bringing a chance of snow for Saturday night and Sunday.  Then, yet another storm system will approach for the following Tuesday night through Friday.  This is the potential storm system that I have been talking about for a few days now.  This storm system could be a repeat of what we just experienced, as it could form into a quite intense and slow moving Nor’easter and there should be plenty of cold air to work with, so someone along the East Coast is likely to get yet another major snowstorm.

Friday, March 8th, 2013 - Evening Weather Discussion

The weather will be quite nice and warm now through Monday until the next cold front passes through our area.  Then it looks as if the next storm to keep an eye on will be for next Friday morning as a storm system will approach our area from the west. There should be plenty of cold air in place at that time to produce snow in our area, but everything depends on the track of the storm.  Right now it looks as if the track of the storm would keep it to our south.  This would lock the cold air in place so that any precipitation would be snow, but the storm does not seem as if it will be a big snow producer right now, just producing some light snow, however we will need to keep an eye on this.  If this storm tracks further to the north it would be rain, and if it tracks too far to the south it would miss us completely.  I can also see how this storm could possibly turn into something more significant if it slowed down and developed a bit more when it hits the coast.  After this storm passes we will then have to watch for the next possible big Nor’easter for the following week.  This could be a much more significant storm, and very slow moving, just as this one was, for the time period between Tuesday evening the 19th and Friday the 22nd.

In Hindsight

I could never have guessed this amount of snow could have fallen.  No global model was showing anything even remotely like this.  The only model that was showing this was the short-range American model which so miserably handled the snow potential for the previous night saying we would get 6-12 inches when we got nothing, and then it was the ONLY model that was correct showing this for last night.  Unfortunately, when that model makes as many massive mistakes as it has recently, it is hard to ever believe it.  Hindsight being 20/20 we were on the western edge of the storm and ended up being in what is called the deformation band of the storm.  The deformation band is where quite heavy snow can fall and in this case, that band set right up over Northern New Jersey, and then it simply did not move.   Just shows you, sometimes you just don't know.

Final Snowfall Totals - Incredible, 8.8 Inches in Oakland
