Monday, January 6th, 2014 - Morning Weather Discussion

The weather these past few days has been absolutely crazy and it will be even crazier today.  First we had a snowstorm on Friday that brought us near blizzard conditions with a State of Emergency and Blizzard warnings on Long Island, then as the storm departed the temperatures dropped to 5 degrees below zero on Saturday morning at my location and 13 below zero at Walpack, Sussex County.  Then we had surprising freezing rain yesterday as the temperature managed to drop to 4 degrees at my location just prior to the rain stating.  The freezing rain lasted until last night in most places, then I wake up and it is 56 degrees and almost all the snow is melted.  Then another arctic cold front will come through late this morning, bringing with it an abrupt end to this very brief heat wave.  There will be some heavy rain later this morning as the cold front approaches, then temperatures wills start to plummet by late this morning and the rain will change to snow flurries or snow showers that could leave a dusting in some places and cause roads to freeze up nearly instantly, so please be careful driving late this afternoon and this evening.  Temperatures will drop to the mid 30’s this afternoon, then the 20’s this evening, then finally reaching the mid single digits below zero in many locations tomorrow morning, with the coldest of locations in Sussex County again likely to reach 10 to 15 degrees below zero.  Then temperatures will warm tomorrow only to the upper single digits in most places.  The next storm to watch will be a very weak one that will approach on Friday, bringing a chance for a dusting to an inch of snow on Friday morning.  Another storm may approach for Saturday, bringing us another chance for rain that could change to some snow showers on Saturday night.  Yet another storm will approach for next Monday night and Tuesday that will again bring us a chance for rain and the possibility of a high in the upper 50’s next Tuesday.  Things will then cool off next Wednesday and I remain interested in the possibility of a snowstorm in this time period, but it now looks to be moved back to more like next Friday.  Check back for updates.  Honestly, this is some of the craziest weather I have ever seen.  Nothing will surprise me anymore.
