Tuesday, February 11th, 2014 - Morning Weather Discussion

A storm will be developing along the Gulf Coast tomorrow, bringing some snow and a lot of ice to the Deep South on Tuesday, Wednesday, and into Thursday.  Areas of Northern Georgia, Northwestern and Northern South Carolina (away from the coast), and Central North Carolina are likely to be devastated with ice, toppling trees and breaking branches, causing widespread long-duration power outages that you will be reading about on National news on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Areas from the southern Appalachians of Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, to areas of Virginia west of about Interstate 95 up to the Washington D.C and Baltimore area, Maryland (west of the Delmarva Peninsula), all of Pennsylvania (excluding the extreme Southeastern section near Philadelphia), Northern New Jersey (north of a line from about 10 miles north of Trenton, northeast to about Jersey City and New York City), Southeastern New York State,  Northwestern Connecticut, Western Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine will be facing a different problem, and that will be heavy snow, with a widespread area of 12-18 inches likely throughout the areas I just mentioned with localized areas receiving 18-24 inches, and a bull’s eye of 24-30 inches possible near the Washington D.C. area.

Winds will also be a problem with this storm in areas from Northern Virginia northward as this storm will most likely reach blizzard classification once it nears the New Jersey area.  Winds will gust 30-40 mph, and possibly as high as 50 mph once you get into New England.

Flooding may also be a problem in coastal areas, as winds could gust over 50 mph along the immediate coast.

People in the areas outlined above should take all necessary precautions for the possibility of heavy snow or ice, potentially leading to wide-spread power outages, especially in the areas that receive the ice in the Deep South.
