Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 - Evening Weather Discussion

The storm today worked out nearly exactly as expected with most areas receiving between 4-10 inches of snow from south to north across Northern New Jersey.  Montague and Wantage in far Northern Sussex County received 11 inches and areas of Orange County, NY received up to 12 inches.  Areas that had less than 10-12 inches received a mixture of freezing rain and sleet that held accumulations down accordingly.

Moving forward, our next storm of concern will occur this weekend.  One storm will scoot through the Southeastern United States and head towards the North Carolina Coast.  This storm should head out to sea, just missing giving areas of the Southeast a chance of snow.  There remains a possibility that this storm could turn up the coast further on Saturday and I will be keeping an eye on this just in case.

On Sunday another disturbance will approach our area.  This disturbance is the one everyone has been talking about, myself included, as being a potential monster.  The question remains whether that potential will be realized.  Of this I am still not certain, and likely won't be until the disturbance that is currently in the Pacific Ocean comes on shore on Thursday evening.  This data won't be available for the models until Friday morning and I therefore don't trust any model solutions for the potential storms this weekend until then.  With this said, at this moment in time, without that important model data, it looks as if we may get a couple or possibly a few inches of snow on Sunday and Sunday night.

My concern remains that the models were indeed showing the potential for a monster storm on Sunday night several days back, and many of the models were consistent in showing this potential.  Then the piece of energy goes out over the Pacific Ocean and they lose it, quite literally.  I am very concerned that the storm may reappear for Sunday night and Monday morning once the piece of energy comes on shore again on Thursday night.  As I said previously though, this data won't be analyzed by the models until the morning runs on Friday.  So, check back for updates.

Moving forward beyond that potential.  I am now feeling confident that yet another significant winter storm or possibly two separate winter storms will affect our area on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. The exact evolution of these storms is not yet certain, but they should be developing along the Gulf Coast and moving in our direction, much as the storms did this week.  Therefore, I would expect a similar result next week around next Wednesday and Thursday.  These storms could be one big one that lasts two days or two separate storms that could start as early as Tuesday night and end as late as Friday night.

After that or those storms pass, yet another storm will likely bring us more snow the following Sunday.

Wow.  I need some rest.  Have a nice evening and thanks for reading.

  1. Its very interesting that energy from the Pacific seems to be playing a major roll in the storms we have gotten this season.
