Wednesday, March 19th, 2014 - Morning Weather Discussion

A significant amount of the information below is a re-post from last night, as it still applies.

I don't know how many of you know this, but someone was killed in the wind storm that we had last week. He was just sitting in the living room of his home watching television when a tree fell on his house in Hopatcong, Sussex County.
Click here to read the story.  We had 50+ mph wind gusts with that storm. New England also got a couple of feet of snow with that storm.

The reason I am mentioning this is that there is a small chance that we could see an even stronger storm than that develop somewhere near the East Coast next Tuesday night.  More about that in a minute…

First though, we will have some showers this afternoon and tonight and that could even start as a bit of snow in far Northwestern New Jersey.

Tomorrow we will have just a chance of a rain or snow shower.

Saturday we will have a chance of a rain shower in the morning and a snow shower in the evening.

Sunday we will have a chance of a snow shower.

Then, oh boy.  What can I say?  We really need to keep a very close eye on the situation the beginning of next week.

The set up is this...

One storm will be developing along the Gulf Coast on Monday and Tuesday.

Another storm will be dropping down from Canada.

The Polar Vortex will be making another visit to Southeastern Canada, supplying most of the Eastern United Sates with cold air.

The big question is whether these two storms will merge, or how much they merge if they do.

Possibility Number 1 -the two systems merge completely leading to an EXTREMELY intense storm forming somewhere near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and then move northeast to near Cape Cod. This track would bring us, or someone close by, very heavy snow and very strong winds next Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Possibility Number 2 -  the two systems merge partially, bringing us, or someone close by, some light to moderate and possibly even significant snow next Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Possibility Number 3 - the two systems don't merge and they both just harmlessly pass out to sea.

Keep in mind that even if these two storms merge, the storm could still miss us to the south or east.

Now, what do I think will happen?  I am leaning most toward Number 2, with second choice being Number 1 and third choice being Number 3.  Keep in mind that even if I end up being correct with choice number 1 or 2, it does NOT mean it will hit us directly at all.  It could miss south or east again.

This does not exactly add up with my three possibilities above, but I think we have about a 50% chance of seeing accumulating snow next Tuesday and Wednesday, about a 25% chance of seeing nothing and a 25% chance of seeing a very intense storm.

Check back for updates.  If Number 1 happens, look out.  Honestly, Number 1 could really be unreal for someone along the East Coast.

Oh yes, and I also believe this is the last chance for significant snow this winter.
