Saturday, January 24, 2015 - Evening Weather Discussion

Well, what can I say?  Here we go again… MAJOR Nor’easter potential Monday night and Tuesday…  POSSIBLY even a blizzard for some, with widespread 1-2 FOOT snowfall amounts possible…

Today I recorded 7.5 inches of snow at my location.  I had forecast 6-8 inches of snow in Northern New Jersey in the areas that did not mix with sleet and freezing rain.  I had watched last evening as major New York City television forecasters predicted 0-4 inches for Northern New Jersey.  In actuality Northern New Jersey received 4-9 inches just as I said.  The National Weather Service was also only calling for 3-6 inches and only issued warnings AFTER the 6 inches had already fallen.  Yeah, I know I busted on a couple of forecasts earlier this year, but I pretty much nailed this one.  Click here to view snowfall totals for Central and Northwestern NJ and click here to view snowfall totals for Northeastern NJ.

Now, the BIG QUESTION is whether I get the next one right…

Here is the set-up...

Tomorrow will be the calm before the storm with just variably cloudy skies and a chance of a flurry.

Monday morning around 1 am light snow should start to fall in response to a low pressure area approaching the Middle Atlantic Coast from the west.  The light snow should continue until the evening with a dusting to an inch or two of accumulation possible during the day.

Monday evening the storm will intensify as it exits the Middle Atlantic Coast. It will then start to move northward up the East Coast and intensify rapidly. The storm will then reach a point about 100 miles off the coast of Atlantic City on Tuesday morning and stall out before finally moving eastward and away on Tuesday night.

If the track that I outlined above verifies, and I believe it will.  There will be widespread snowfall amounts of 1-2 FEET from the Delmarva Peninsula and Eastern Maryland, through Eastern Pennsylvania, ALL of New Jersey, Southeastern New York State including New York City and Long Island, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Southern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Southern Maine.  Some locations within this band of 1-2 feet could very well get more than 2 feet of snow.

It will also be very cold while the snow is falling with temperatures likely only in the mid teens to mid 20’s the entire time the snow is falling.  This will allow for snow drifts of 2-4 feet in many locations as the snow will be light and fluffy.

A lot of people have already asked me if this real.  I agree, pinch me too, but yeah, confidence is high, I repeat, confidence IS high.  I loved that segment from the movie War Games, for those of you who know what I am talking about.

Of course, Mother Nature could throw us a surprise again, but this is truly what I expect.  Only time will tell.

After this storm passes it will get VERY cold with lows dropping to the single digits Wednesday and Thursday mornings and highs only in the low to mid 20’s for the most part through the next two weeks.

The next chances for snow will then be Thursday night and Friday morning, then next Sunday night and Monday, then the following Friday and Saturday.

Please join me early in the morning for the latest on this impending serious weather event.

You can be sure I will be up early tomorrow morning.
