Two heavy snow bands have developed, one over Northwestern NJ and one over Northeastern NJ and New York City. This is MUCH earlier than anticipated. The snow ratios are also extremely high, probably on order of 20:1 right now as the temperature has been 16 degrees here all day. That is one way that we can manage to maintain the 1-2 foot snowfall amounts even if the storm does go a bit east of the expected track. Lots of surprises with these storms and you just never know.
You can really see the storm starting to intensify rapidly off the Middle Atlantic Coast. These heavy snow bands are in relation to the rapid intensification of the storm as it hits the coast. The clipper system has very cold air associated with it. Meanwhile the waters are still relatively warm off the East Coast and in the the Gulf Stream where this storm is developing. It is this temperature contrast that really allows these storms to bomb out.
Interesting situation. Let's see what happens.
