Well, lots of stuff going on, BRUTAL COLD, and MANY chances
for snow on the way over the next two weeks…
We will have one more nice day today before the snow and
brutal cold arrive. It should be sunny today with highs in the low to mid 30’s.
Tomorrow an Alberta Clipper will approach our area (see key
terms to the left of the page), bringing with it a chance for a bit of light
snow that will start between about 9 am and 11 am and end between around 4 pm
and 7 pm. Accumulations should be very
light with only a dusting to a half of an inch possible in some locations.
Friday the cold air will move in and it will be VERY COLD
with lows approaching zero on Friday morning and highs only in the low to mid
TEENS.
Saturday another Alberta Clipper will approach, BUT so will
the Polar Vortex from Northern Canada. This could cause a very interesting
situation to develop somewhere near our area as the systems approach on
Saturday. This combination of events could cause a trough to develop as the low
approaches the New Jersey Coast. This may cause a 50 or so mile wide band of
snow to extend inward from the ocean (somewhat similar to Lake Effect snow).
Within this band, if it develops and wherever it sets up there would likely be
2-6 inch or higher snowfall amounts on Saturday night. It is not yet possible
to determine whether this will set up in our immediate area or to our north
again, but we need to keep a close eye on it. I have seen these situations
develop and they are highly unusual situations where you can literally have a
snowstorm in a 5-10 mile wide band that extends hundreds of miles inland from
ocean, but either side of this narrow band there is only a dusting. I think
that this type of situation may develop somewhere in the Northeast on Saturday
night, but we will just have to see where that ends up.
Sunday the snow should come to an end early in the morning, and
then things will clear out with highs only in the mid to upper teens.
Monday the Polar Vortex will be over our area so it will be
EXTREMELY COLD in the morning with lows likely in the upper to mid single
digits BELOW ZERO and highs only in the mid teens. I would not be surprised to
see some temperatures of 15 degrees below zero in the coldest locations on
Monday morning.
Tuesday we will then have a chance of a significant
snowstorm as a low pressure area approaches from the southeast.
Next Wednesday the snow should come to an end early in the
morning, and then it will clear out.
Next Thursday and Friday there is a slight chance of a
coastal storm developing that would threaten us with more snow.
Next Saturday should then be nice before another storm
system approaches our area from the southeast, bringing us another chance for
snow next Sunday and Monday.
