Wednesday, February 18, 2015 - Morning Weather Discussion

WOW is it cold in some of the valleys of Northwest NJ this morning. I have -3 at my weather station in Allamuchy, Warren County at the moment and it is -9 right now in Andover in Sussex County!  It is amazing how the cold air has sunk into the valleys this morning and with the light winds it just sits there. These are the perfect conditions for extreme cold and this will happen again as we go into Friday and Saturday mornings as well…

Clouds will increase today as an Alberta Clipper approaches (see key terms on the left of the page), this will bring us some snow showers tonight and tomorrow that could accumulate to a dusting to an inch or so. It will also be cold with highs today in the mid to upper 20’s, dropping to the mid to upper teens tomorrow.

Friday will be extremely cold with lows dropping to the mid to low single digits below zero and highs only in the mid teens.

Saturday morning will start out very cold again with lows in the mid to single digits below zero, but highs will warm to the upper 20’s as clouds increase and light snow develops in the afternoon between about 1 pm and 4pm. The will continue lightly through the night.

The snow could accumulate to 1-3 inches before changing to rain on Sunday morning between about 6 am and 9 am. The rain will then continue through the day as temperatures warm to the low 40’s. The rain will end in the evening.

Monday will start out sunny but clouds will increase and there will be a chance of snow showers at night with highs around 30.

Tuesday through Thursday morning a coastal storm will likely develop, however it still appears that this storm will remain just far enough out to sea to spare us from a snowstorm. I will leave a slight chance of snow in the forecast, just in case.  Highs will be in the low to mid 20’s.

Next Friday will be nice with highs in the mid 20’s.

Next Saturday clouds will increase once again as a coastal storm is likely to develop. This storm will threaten us with snow next Saturday night and rain or snow Next Sunday through Wednesday. I am actually quite interested in this storm because this storm is likely to be the pattern changer that leads us to more Spring-like weather. The pattern changer storms are often the Grand Finale for the winter season and have the potential to become quite intense. In addition, storms in March tend to be slower moving as well. We shall see.

Have a great day!

Below are some photos of Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, courtesy of Elizabeth Legon. Elizabeth was actually on her way to Cape Cod when Mother Nature decided to get in the way with the blizzard there this past weekend. Thanks Elizabeth for these wonderful photos of Mystic Seaport and the Mayflower in the blizzard!
