Sunday, November 17, 2019 - Morning Weather Discussion

A Nor’easter is approaching and will bring coastal flooding and potentially some inland freezing rain and maybe even a bit of snow…

A strong Nor’easter is developing off the coast of the Southeastern United States. This storm will move northward off the East Coast and will bring our area some rain, although the bigger story will be the chance for some coastal flooding and a slight chance of some inland freezing rain tonight into tomorrow morning, and possibly a bit of inland snow tomorrow night into Tuesday morning, as colder air moves into our area behind the storm and a disturbance develops over our area.

Today there will be a chance of a sprinkle or flurry near the coast this morning, and a sprinkle this afternoon and evening, with a slight chance for drizzle elsewhere, possibly freezing at night in some parts of Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, Orange and Putnam Counties in NY, and in Northern Fairfield County, CT. Highs will range from the mid 30’s in Northeastern PA to the mid 40’s along the NJ Coast and on Long Island.

Tomorrow there will be a chance of sprinkles near the coast early in the morning, a slight chance of drizzle elsewhere in the morning, possibly freezing in some parts of Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, Orange and Putnam Counties in NY, and in Northern Fairfield County, CT, then light rain developing everywhere during the day, becoming steadier and heavier at night, possibly mixing with or changing to snow late at night in parts of Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, Orange and Putnam Counties in NY, and in Northern Fairfield County, CT. Lows will range from the upper 20’s to low 30’s in Northeastern PA to the low 40’s along the coast and on Long island, with highs from the mid 30’s to the mid 40’s.

Below are the freezing rain maps from the short-range American model (on top) and the European model (on bottom). Notice how they disagree on the potential for freezing rain. The reason is that the short-range American model is forecasting some precipitation to develop inland tonight, where temperatures may fall below freezing, while the European model only has some precipitation along the coast tonight, where temperatures will be above freezing. Tuesday the rain or snow will end in the morning in Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, Orange and Putnam Counties in NY, and in Northern Fairfield County, CT, and rain ending elsewhere, followed by clearing. Lows will range from the low to mid 30’s in Northeastern PA to the upper 30’s to low 40’s along the coast and on Long Island, with highs in the mid 40’s to mid 50’s.

Below are the latest short-range American (top two) and European model (bottom two) snowfall maps for tomorrow night into Tuesday morning. Notice that the short-range American model is currently forecasting much more snowfall, especially in Northeastern PA. I doubt that these higher snowfall amounts will happen, but it isn’t impossible.
