Mesoscale Discussion Issued for a Large Part of Our Area...

Mesoscale Discussion 1632

NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK

   0256 PM CDT Sat Aug 29 2020

   Areas affected...Portions of central/eastern PA...northern/central

   NJ...and southern NY

   Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely

   Valid 291956Z - 292200Z

   Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent

SUMMARY...Isolated strong to damaging winds may occur with storms as

they move eastward this afternoon. Watch issuance appears unlikely

   at this time.

DISCUSSION...Showers and low-topped thunderstorms have formed over

the past couple of hours along a surface trough extending southward

across central PA. Poor mid-level lapse rates observed on the 12Z

PIT sounding and related weak instability (MLCAPE generally 500-1000

J/kg) have limited updraft strength so far this afternoon. Even so,

there appears to be a window for storms to modestly strengthen over

the next couple of hours as they move eastward into central PA and

parts of NJ, where continued diurnal heating is acting to modestly

steepen low-level lapse rates. Strengthening low/mid-level westerly

winds associated with an approaching upper trough are evident in the

VWP from KCCX. Some potential may exist for isolated strong/gusty

downdraft winds to produce occasional damage with any of the

stronger cores that can develop through the remainder of the

afternoon. At this point, overall convective coverage and intensity

will probably remain too isolated/marginal to justify watch

   issuance.

Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - Daily Weather Discussion

Severe storms possible tomorrow and again Saturday in our area and Major Hurricane Laura is approaching the Gulf Coast…

Well, there is a lot to talk about today. First in our area, a disturbance will pass north of our area tomorrow and will push very warm and moist air into our area. In fact, tomorrow will be the warmest day we have seen in a while and probably one of the top 5 warmest of the summer. That much warmth and humidity, combined with a strong disturbance passing north of our area, will bring us an enhanced chance for severe thunderstorms tomorrow, especially late in the day. Click here for the latest Convective Outlook discussion for our area or look at the map below.

And then for people along the Gulf Coast, Major Hurricane Laura will make landfall near the Texas/Louisiana border tonight. This storm will likely cause catastrophic damage in these areas, especially around Lake Charles, Louisiana. Click here for the latest on major Hurricane Laura from the National Hurricane Center. The remnants of Hurricane Laura, a disturbance, and a cold front will then pass through our area Saturday, bringing the chance for more severe weather to our area.

Today will be mostly sunny, with increasing cloudiness and a chance of a shower or thunderstorm at night. Highs will be in the mid 70’s to mid 80’s.

Tomorrow will be variably cloudy with a chance of a shower or thunderstorm early in the morning, then it will be variably cloudy with a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm during the day, and then a better chance again at night, as a strong disturbance passes to our north. Some of the storms could be severe. It will be quite hot, with highs in the upper 80’s to mid 90’s.

Friday will be variably cloudy with a chance of an afternoon or evening shower or thunderstorm as a disturbance, cold front, and the remnants of Laura approach our area. Highs will be in the mid 80’s to low 90’s.

Saturday, clouds will increase with showers or thunderstorm likely in the afternoon and evening, possibly heavy at times. Some of the storms could be severe. Highs will be in the upper 70’s and 80’s.

Sunday through next Saturday, September 5th, are then looking nice with highs in the 70’s to low 80’s Sunday, the mid to upper 70’s Monday, the 70’s Tuesday, the mid 70’s to low 80’s next Wednesday, the upper 70’s to mid 80’s next Thursday, the 80’s next Friday, and the upper 70’s to mid 80’s next Saturday.

Next Sunday, September 6th, through next Tuesday, September 8th, are then looking variably cloudy with a chance of a shower or thunderstorm each day. Highs will be in the mid 70’s to low 80’s next Sunday and Monday, and in the 70’s next Tuesday.

Mesoscale Discussion Issued by the Storm Prediction Center for Parts of Our Area...

Mesoscale Discussion 1570

NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK

   0210 PM CDT Tue Aug 25 2020

   Areas affected...NJ...DE...MD...Northern VA...WV

   Concerning...Severe potential...Watch likely

   Valid 251910Z - 252045Z

   Probability of Watch Issuance...80 percent

SUMMARY...Thunderstorms are expected to move into the region with in

the next hour or two, with an attendant threat for damaging wind

gusts across a large area from WV into NJ.

DISCUSSION...Thunderstorms continue to increase in coverage and

strength upstream of the region over the mid/upper OH Valley.

Current storm motion estimates bring these storms to the edge of

Severe Thunderstorm Watch 449 around 2000/2030Z. Air mass from the

central Appalachians into the northern Mid-Atlantic has warmed in

the upper 80s/low 90s, removing all convective inhibition and

resulting in moderate buoyancy. Most recent mesoanalysis estimates

MLCAPE is near 1000 J/kg and effective bulk shear is around 25-30 kt

over much of this area. Additionally, robust diurnal heating has

resulted in steep low-level lapse rates. These steep low-level lapse

rates coupled with modest mid-level moisture results in an

environment favorable for strong, water-loaded downbursts.

As a result, the expectation is for the ongoing storms to move into

the region within the next hour or two, with an attendant threat for

damaging wind gusts across a large area from WV into NJ.

Severe storms possible this afternoon and evening and then watching for the potential of a major Hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast…

Very warm and moist air is streaming into our area today ahead of an approaching cold front. And below is the map of the Convective Outlook for today, but you will notice there is the potential for severe weather again on Thursday, and then we will have to watch for the potential for more severe weather with the remnants of Laura, a disturbance, and a cold front passing through our area Saturday.

After the chance for severe thunderstorms passes tonight, we will then need to immediately turn our eyes towards Hurricane Laura in the Gulf of Mexico. There is a chance that Laura could rapidly intensify, reaching major hurricane strength prior to making landfall along the Texas Coast Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Click here for the latest on Hurricane Laura from the National Hurricane Center.

Tomorrow is then looking mostly sunny and much cooler, but only for one day, with highs in the mid 70’s to low 80’s.

Friday will be variably cloudy with highs in the mid 80’s to low 90’s.

Saturday, clouds will increase with showers or thunderstorms likely in the afternoon and evening as the remnants of Laura, a disturbance, and cold front pass through our area. Highs will range from the upper 70’s to low 80’s in Northeastern PA to the upper 80’s to low 90’s in Central NJ.

Sunday through next Saturday, September 5th, are then looking nice with highs in the 70’s to mid 80’s.

Next Sunday, September 6th, and next Monday, September 7th, will be variably cloudy with a chance of an afternoon or evening shower or thunderstorm. Highs will be in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s next Sunday and in the mid 70’s to low 80’s next Monday.

...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FOR PORTIONS OF

   THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION...

...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM THE UPPER

OHIO VALLEY INTO MUCH OF THE NORTHEAST...AND PORTIONS OF CENTRAL

   IDAHO INTO SOUTHWEST MONTANA...

   ...SUMMARY...

Thunderstorms capable of isolated severe gusts (55-65 mph) resulting

in scattered wind damage are probable for portions of the

   Mid-Atlantic states.

   ...The Northeast...

A strong cold front is forecast to shift across the U.S./Canada

border and move quickly eastward across New England, while

progressing more slowly southeastward across the Mid Atlantic region

and southward across the central Appalachians.  Isolated general

thunderstorms may be ongoing Tuesday morning and lending some

uncertainty regarding destabilization across lower elevations near

the coast ahead of this activity.  However, west-northwesterly flow

in the mid levels is forecast to strengthen during the day across

the region and support relatively fast multicell storms.

It appears the greatest risk for severe gusts and associated

tree/wind damage will occur farther south across parts of eastern

PA/NJ into the Chesapeake Bay vicinity.  Strong heating and mean

mixing ratios in the 15-16 g/kg range, will result in a moderately

to very unstable boundary layer by mid afternoon (2000-3000 J/kg

MLCAPE).  Effective shear 20-30 kt will favor a multicell convective

mode supportive of clusters and line segments potentially capable of

isolated 55-65 mph gusts and accompanying scattered wind damage.

Farther west, a strong storm cannot be ruled out during the morning

over Lower MI vicinity.  However, additional storms either

rejuvenating on earlier-day outflow or associated with a weak

disturbance, will foster a risk for strong to severe thunderstorms

across the upper OH Valley during the afternoon/early evening.

...Northern Intermountain region into the northern Plains...

A series of cyclonic mid-level disturbances will continue to move in

an easterly anticyclonic arc across the northern Intermountain

region and northern Plains, embedded within a belt of 40-50 kt 500mb

flow around the northern periphery of the upper ridge.

Afternoon heating will support the development of steep low-level

lapse rates and isolated to widely scattered storm initiation over

the higher terrain.  Given strong mid-level flow promoting

fast-moving storms, and inverted-v profile, evaporative cooling

coupled with stronger momentum in the mid levels will favor

severe-gust potential with the stronger cores.

Farther east into the northern Plains, a dry/capped boundary layer

is expected, that should act to substantially limit convective

development though the afternoon.  Still, with fast flow aloft

supporting potential for updraft organization, gusty/damaging winds

would be possible with any sustained storm which could develop.

Overnight, evolution of a southwesterly low-level jet may foster an

increase in convection coverage from the Dakotas into the Great

Lakes region, though storms would likely be primarily elevated above

the capping layer.  Some risk for hail would likely exist given

steep mid-level lapse rates supporting ample CAPE above the cap, and

a locally strong wind gust cannot be ruled out.

   ...Upper Midwest...

The potential for some increase in coverage is expected after dark

as warm advection increases in conjunction with a southwesterly

low-level jet.  Given the anticyclonic belt of fast flow overhead, a

couple of stronger storms will be possible, with attendant potential

for locally gusty winds or marginal hail.

   ...Arizona...

Model forecasts continue to depict small mid-level cyclonic

disturbances moving southwestward across Arizona Tuesday and Tuesday

night, within a belt of enhanced northeasterly mid-level flow.

As the airmass heats/destabilizes through the afternoon, storms

should develop over higher terrain/the Mogollon Rim, and then shift

southeastward into the lower deserts.  With a very deep mixed layer

promoting evaporative downdraft acceleration, potential for locally

damaging wind gusts is evident with a couple of the stronger

   storms/storm clusters.

   ...Central/Western Gulf Coast region...

The latest National Hurricane Center forecasts continue to show

Marco weakening with time as it moves westward along the Louisiana

coast, followed by Laura expected to be moving northwestward across

the eastern and central Gulf of Mexico as a

   strengthening/substantial hurricane.  With sufficient low-level

shear expected across parts of Louisiana due to the presence of

Marco, risk for a brief/weak tornado or two will persist through the

day.  Meanwhile, with Laura expected to reach the north-central Gulf

south of southeastern Louisiana late Tuesday night, additional

strengthening of the low-level wind field is expected.  While

questions persist regarding the forecast track of Laura, a continued

risk for a couple of weak/brief tornadoes is expected across parts

of the central/western Gulf Coast region through the evening and

   overnight hours.
