Thursday, September 2, 2021 - Daily Weather Discussion

Well, I must admit, the remnants of Ida surprised even me, but it is getting to the point that nothing surprises me anymore…

I have thought a lot about this and I think the reasons that this ended up worse than anyone imagined is that we had the prior hurricane drop tremendous amounts of rain only a week or so ago, so the ground was already saturated and then the remnants of Ida hit at the worst possible time, at the height of the warming of the day, leading to maximum strength of the storm as it reached our area. The amounts of rain were amazing, with Newark NJ breaking a one-day rain total, but the most amazing thing was the intensity of the rain, with New York City breaking an all-time one hour rainfall total of more than 3 inches in one hour. The rapid rainfall was the thing that got us, especially with the ground already being saturated. And then you have the tornado that made direct hits on homes in South Jersey, and oh my.  What a storm. It is just surreal that Ida maintained as much strength as she did after going inland in Louisiana. I have never seen anything like this. Highest rainfall total I found was 11 inches in Flemington, Hunterdon County, NJ.  Global warming is real and if anyone tells you anything different, stop listening to them.  All of this is just getting exhausting.
