Tuesday, May 21st, 2013 - Evening Weather Discussion
Well, the Oklahoma situation was horrendous. Unfortunately, that stuff is moving our way and will arrive on Thursday afternoon. The thunderstorms will indeed be quite strong and could certainly produce tornadoes here as well, although no where near as strong as occurred in Oklahoma. The reason for the tornadoes in Oklahoma and possibly here as well on Thursday is that we have very warm air surging north yesterday, today, and tomorrow ahead of a strong cold front. The high temperatures were in the mid to upper 80's today, and will likely reach the mid 80's tomorrow. Then on Thursday the strong thunderstorms will move in during the afternoon. The cold air will then move in behind the front, dropping temperatures to the upper 40's by Friday morning, with the high only reaching the low 50's on Friday, with snow flurries possible in New York Sate, then lows in the low 40's on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning! That is why these storms have been so strong and why they are likely to be quite strong on Thursday afternoon as well. When you see those types of temperature differences, look out.
