Thursday, December 5th, 2013 - Morning Weather Discussion

I have nothing to add to what I said earlier for the two storms this weekend, so I will just re-post the discussion from earlier today.  Basically we have a chance of some accumulating snow and sleet on Friday night into Saturday morning, possibly a dusting to 3 inches from southeast to northwest, then on Sunday night into Monday we will get snow changing to sleet, then freezing rain, possibly remaining freezing rain until around sunrise on Monday morning.  There could be 2-4 inches of snow and ice from that storm as well.  Then it will get brutally cold for the middle of next week, followed by a bit of warming toward the end of next week.  At least it now looks like we will get a break from the precipitation between Tuesday and Saturday.  Then on Sunday a storm will be forming along the Gulf Coast and this storm will move northeast and up the East Coast of the United States.  It is likely to become a very significant storm and possibly a Nor'easter.  The track is still very uncertain though so I can’t yet tell whether this will be a rainstorm or a snowstorm for us, or a combination of the two.  Check back for updates.

The European model holds firm with a projected snow/ice accumulation of a dusting to 5 inches from southeast to northwest across our region on Friday night into Saturday, and 2-6 inches across our region on Sunday night into Monday with a widespread area of 5-6 inches for all of Northwest New Jersey.  In both cases the amounts gradually increase as you head northwest.   I must say though that there could definitely be some significant sleet mixed in as well though and that could keep the actual snowfall accumulations MUCH lower.  We will just have to wait and see.  Towards the end of next week the model is actually now predicting a warm-up after some very cold temperatures for the middle of next week, so we will see what happens.
