A major Nor’easter is likely to develop off the Middle
Atlantic Coast Monday through Wednesday…
First though, we will have increasing cloudiness today with
light rain or light snow developing this evening and quickly changing to light
rain. Highs will be in the upper 30’s to
low 40’s.
Saturday we will have light rain or showers that will become
heavy at night. The high will be in the
low to mid 40’s.
Sunday the rain will come to an end early in the morning and
then we will have clearing with a high in the upper 30’s.
Then things will get interesting…
The system that will be moving through here on Saturday,
bringing the rain, will move of shore and reach a point near Bermuda. At the same time a strong upper level low pressure
area will be dropping down into the Northern Plains states from Canada. In response to this upper level low pressure area
dropping down from Canada, the storm near Bermuda will then go into reverse and
start heading back toward us. The storm
system over the Upper Great Plains states will then start to slide east into
the Great Lakes and transfer its energy to the storm that will be nearing the
New Jersey coast on Tuesday. This will
cause precipitation to develop on Monday evening and continue into Wednesday
afternoon or evening.
The big question will be how quickly the low pressure area
over the Great Lakes transfers its energy to the storm off the Middle Atlantic
Coast? If it transfers its energy
quickly we would be looking at a very intense storm that could border on
blizzard status for someone between the West Virginia and Virginia Mountains and
Maine. If it transfers its energy more
slowly we would be looking at a weaker storm that would likely start as snow
but change to rain on Tuesday morning, then back to snow as it starts to
intensify by Tuesday evening and continuing into Wednesday.
I DO NOT yet know for
sure what will happen. I can only say
that in either case someone between the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia,
through Western Maryland, Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania, up through
Northern New Jersey, New York State and New England, could get a very
significant snowfall and some lucky area could get more than 2 feet of snow.
I know, I know, how much for Northern New Jersey? It is too early to tell. It all depends upon how quickly the energy
transfers from the storm over the Great Lakes to the Nor’easter forming off the
coast. Right now the best guess would be
that we get some snow at the start, then it MAY change to rain during the day
on Tuesday, maybe. Then back to snow by
Tuesday evening, continuing through Wednesday.
We will have to wait and see how this all works out.
The snow should come to an end on Wednesday night, then
luckily we should get some well-deserved nice weather for Thursday through next
Monday with highs in the 40’s.
Then the next storm system will approach with a chance of
rain or snow for next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Please join me this evening for the latest on this potential
very significant Nor’easter for the Northeastern United States next Monday
through Wednesday.
I will likely also post some quick updates this afternoon.
