Wednesday, December 3, 2014 - Evening Weather Discussion

The potential is there for a blockbuster storm for the Northeastern United States early next week…

First though, we will finally get a nice day tomorrow with highs in the upper 30’s to low 40’s.

Then Friday a storm system will approach from the west and it will stick around for a while.  Light rain or light snow will develop in the afternoon and then change to light rain in the evening.  The high will be in the upper 30’s.

We will have rain on Saturday with highs in the low 40’s.

The storm will then start to turn into a Nor’easter off the coast on Sunday.  This could cause the rain to change to freezing rain, sleet or snow as early as Sunday morning.  It is also possible it will stay just warm enough to be rain, so this will completely depend upon how the storm develops.  The worst case scenario would be the potential for severe icing with this storm.  Hopefully it will either be just warm enough for rain or just cold enough for snow but icing is a serious potential with this storm on both Sunday and Monday as the storm will continue to strengthen along the Middle Atlantic Coast and will likely move very slowly.  Highs will be in the lower to middle 30’s both Sunday and Monday.

This storm will likely move very slowly as it will be trapped underneath an unusually strong and cold high pressure area over Canada at the same time that a strong upper level low pressure area will be dropping down from Canada behind this high pressure area.  This strong upper level low will pull the developing storm in off the ocean to a point probably about 50-100 miles off the New Jersey Coast by Monday night or Tuesday morning.  Then there may be a second storm developing and moving up the coast at that time with the first storm moving away after ending as snow on Tuesday morning, or the storms might merge into one larger storm that would continue the snow through the day on Tuesday and into Wednesday afternoon.  If there are two separate storms there is a chance that the second one will miss us and that would clear us out on Tuesday.

So, yeah there is the POTENTIAL for bad weather, possibly even very bad weather Sunday through Wednesday but please keep in mind there is certainly still a chance we could luck out here in Northern New Jersey and this could be rain, although I doubt that will happen for the entire storm.  It is still however a possibility.  On the other hand, we could end up with a severe and crippling ice storm or a blockbuster snowstorm.

The way I see it, I am sticking with what I started saying last night.  There remains the POSSIBILITY of someone, somewhere between the mountains of West Virginia and Virginia up through Western Maryland, Central or Northeastern Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey, New York State, or anywhere in New England to see either a crippling ice storm or 2-3 feet or more of snow.  It is still too early to say if or exactly where this will happen.

After this storm or storms pass we will have some long deserved nice weather for next Thursday through Sunday, followed by another storm most likely the following Tuesday and Wednesday.
