Friday, February 13, 2015 - Evening Weather Discussion

Lots of stuff to talk about this evening as a very dynamic weather situation is about to take place in the Northeastern United States...

An Alberta Clipper is approaching our area in combination with the Polar Vortex. As the extremely cold air of the Polar Vortex approaches the very warm waters of the Gulf Stream off the New Jersey Coast, the storm will develop in explosive fashion...

The results will be that snow will develop between around 11 am and 2 pm and it will become heavy at times between 4 pm and 10 pm although it will continue lightly into Sunday morning. The highs tomorrow will be in the upper 20's.

Winds will also become quite strong as the storm intensifies explosively off shore. This will cause winds to gust as high as 50-60 mph late tomorrow into Sunday morning. If this wind does really materialize, then we would likely have some power outages to deal with which would cause problems with pipes freezing. Also, please be aware that the snow may come down briefly heavy at times between about 4 pm and 10 pm tomorrow night and when you combine this with the strong winds it may very well cause near blizzard conditions for brief periods of time as well as significant blowing and drifting of the snow.

Total snowfall accumulations should be 2-4 inches throughout our area, with the highest amounts likely across Northern Pike County, PA, and Northern Orange County, NY.  There will be some 5-6 inch amounts as you head north of that and also out on Long Island. As you head into Southeastern New England they are likely to get up to or over a foot of snow, with winds possibly gusting to hurricane force along the New England Coast.

The highs on Sunday will only be in the mid teens.

Monday will then be nice but VERY cold with lows dropping to the mid to low single digits below zero and highs only in the mid teens.

Tuesday clouds will likely increase as one storm system approaches from the Southeastern United States and an Alberta Clipper drops down from Canada. If these two storms merge they would bring us a significant snowstorm Tuesday night into Wednesday. We will have to wait and see, as if they don't merge we would likely just have some snow showers or flurries.

It will then be nice Thursday through next Saturday before the next storm approaches from the Southeastern United States on Sunday, bringing a chance of snow next Sunday night and Monday.

It should then be nice but cold next Tuesday and Wednesday before the next chance of snow arrives next Thursday and Friday.

Please join me in the morning for the latest information on tomorrow's impending storm...
