Well, this storm has turned into quite a mess for all of us. The light rain has started changing to freezing rain already in many places and should do so in most places places north of about Rt. 78 by 7 or 8 pm. The light freezing drizzle and rain will continue through the night and then colder air will start to filter into the area and change the light freezing rain to snow from north to south tomorrow morning, starting around 7 am along the New York State border and working its way south to Rt. 78 by around noon or 1 pm.
Ground temperatures will start to fall rather quickly tomorrow morning around 4 or 5 am as the colder air starts to filter in and the precipitation starts to pick up a bit in intensity. This will likely make for a poor morning commute with the moderate precipitation arriving as temperatures are falling to the mid to upper 20's. Temperatures will then hold steady throughout the day in the mid to upper 20's with a combination of snow/sleet/freezing rain.
The moderate precipitation will become light in the evening before finally ending early on Tuesday morning.
Total accumulations should be 2-5 inches with a tenth to a quarter inch of ice throughout our area with the higher amounts likely across Northwestern Monroe County and Pike Counties in Pennsylvania, Northern Sussex and Northern Passaic Counties in NJ, and in Orange and Northwestern Rockland Counties in NY. The lighter end of these accumulations will be in southern sections near Rt. 78.
Things should then clear out for Tuesday and Wednesday before we have another chance of some snow on Thursday as an Alberta Clipper (see key terms on the left of the page) approaches that could bring us an inch or two of snow.
Friday through next Tuesday will then be quite cold with lows in the single digits to around zero each day and highs only in the teens.
There will also be a chance of snow next Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning as another Alberta clipper approaches that could bring us a couple of inches of snow.
Then the next significant snowstorm will be next Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Then a nice but cold Thursday followed by another chance of snow next Friday and Saturday.
Join me early in the morning for my look at the next two weeks and weather discussion by 6:30 am.
