Don’t believe what you are reading in the local newspapers or
watching on television about the end to winter. Yes, it will warm up a bit, but
no, winter is not over yet. We will have at least two more chances at
significant winter-type storms over the next two weeks with no end in sight to
the winter-type pattern into at least the end of March…
Sometimes I just can’t believe what I hear and read by some
of these forecasters. One was saying yesterday in the local paper that he sees
no big storms through at least the next few weeks. I am speechless when I read
things like this. It just amazes me and frankly I don’t know how it is even
possible that anyone can see no big storms coming over the next few weeks, but
anyway…
One thing I agree with is that we will definitely have
warmer weather now as we head into the middle of March…
Today through Monday will be relatively nice with temperatures
warming into the mid 30’s today, the upper 30’s tomorrow and possibly the low
40’s on Monday. We will however have a chance of a snow shower late tonight,
tomorrow, and again on Monday morning.
Tuesday, regardless of the forecasts by the National Weather
Service and the television forecasters in New York City for sun on Tuesday, we
will likely have rain, snow, freezing rain, or sleet develop in the morning,
then change to rain. So, yeah, I don’t expect much in the way of sun on
Tuesday. Fortunately though, I don’t expect many problems with this storm
either as any snow, sleet, or freezing rain should quickly change to rain. The
only potential problem on Tuesday would be if this storm decides to move in
early in the morning before the sun rises and warms things up, but right now it
seems that it will hold off until after sunrise.
Wednesday and Thursday should then be quite nice with highs
approaching 50 on Wednesday, then dropping back to the mid 40’s on Thursday.
The next and bigger concern will be for Friday through
Sunday morning as a low pressure system will develop in the Gulf of Mexico,
then turn north and head in our direction. This storm will meet up with a cold
high pressure area sitting to our north over Southern Canada. This will bring
us a chance for rain, snow, freezing rain, or sleet to develop on Friday and continue
through the day on Saturday, possibly ending on Sunday morning. This storm has
the potential to bring us a significant accumulation of snow, sleet and
freezing rain depending on exactly where the cold front sets up. If the cold
front sets up far enough to our south we would be looking at some significant
accumulations of snow and ice throughout the New York City metropolitan area. On
the other hand, if it sets up to our north we would likely see the snow, sleet
and freezing rain change over to rain rather quickly. We will have to wait and
see, but either way, yes, I would classify this as a big storm.
Things should then clear our next Sunday afternoon and
Monday but then we will have the chance for a significant Nor’easter to develop
next Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing us a chance of rain or snow. And yes, I
would also classify this one as a chance at a big storm.
It should then be nice next Thursday and Friday.
So, yeah, winter is likely not over even though it will
thankfully be a bit warmer around here.
Please join me this evening for the latest information on
the potential for two big winter type storms over the next two weeks.

of Asbury Park) taken yesterday morning. Thanks mom for the photo.
