Thursday, March 5, 2015 - Evening Weather Discussion

This storm is over but more wintry weather is on the way...

This storm created havoc from one side of the country to the other the past few days.

This storm started out by producing a massive hail storm with water spouts along the Southern California Coast. Click here to read the story and see the pictures.

Then the storm moved eastward and stranded motorists on the highways in Kentucky last night where 21 inches of snow fell in only 15 hours. Click here to read the story and watch the video.

Then today a plane went off the runway at Laguardia Airport in New York City while trying to land on the snowy runway. Click here to read the story and watch the video.

This storm worked out almost as expected with just a couple of surprises. One was that the radar showed what looked like relatively good snow over me most of this afternoon but nothing fell from the sky. That was very strange and I can't remember the last time I saw radar echoes so intense with nothing coming from them. I guess the snow was evaporating before reaching the ground. The result was that snowfall amounts ended up an inch or two shy of where I thought they would end up in most places in Northwestern NJ, but rarely do these storms work out exactly as expected.

Snowfall amounts were generally in the 2-10 inch range with most people seeing 4-8 inches.

The highest amounts were in Eastern Pennsylvania where 10 inches was recorded in several locations and in Mercer County, NJ where there were widespread 8 inch amounts.

The lowest amounts in our general area occurred in the locations near the New York border where amounts of 2-3 inches were common.

Central Park New York recorded 7 inches while Manhattan reported 6.1 inches. (Remember I was forecasting 4-10 inches here while the guy on television was saying 2-4 inches last night and this was the same guy who said yesterday would be a pattern busting storm and then spring would be here, with no mention of this storm only a few days ago)

Moving forward, it will be very cold tomorrow with lows dropping to the low to mid single digits and highs will only be in the low 20's.

Saturday should be nice during the day but there will be a chance of a snow shower at night.

Sunday will be variably cloudy with a chance of a snow shower or a bit of light snow at night.

Monday we will have a chance of light snow or snow showers in the morning, then it will clear out and warm to the low 40's.

Tuesday we will have a chance of a bit of rain, snow, freezing rain, or sleet with highs in the low 40's.

Wednesday and Thursday should then be nice with highs in the mid 40's.

Then a cold front will stall out nearby and several storms are likely to develop along the front and move in our directions between next Thursday night and the following Thursday. It will be warmer than it has been recently as we near spring but it will still be near freezing, especially at night, so there will be a chance of rain, snow, freezing rain, or sleet at any time between next Thursday night and the following Thursday. It certainly won't precipitate the entire time but there should be several chances for precipitation during that week. There is a relatively good chance of at least some accumulating snow or ice sometime between next Thursday night and the following Thursday.

Be sure to check back for updates on the future chances for wintry weather...
