Very windy and cold today and tomorrow, then snow and rain…
It will be very windy and cold today and tomorrow with wind gusts over 40 mph possible as a strong cold front is moving through our area. There will also be a chance of a snow shower, especially along the coast. There could be a coating of snow in some places, especially along the coast, where up to an inch of accumulation is possible in some locations. Highs will range from the mid to upper teens in Northeastern PA to the mid 20’s along the coast today, and from around 20 in Northeastern PA to the upper 20’s along the coast tomorrow.
Saturday a storm system and warm front will approach our area, causing snow to develop between about 1 and 4 am from west to east across the Allentown and New York City Metropolitan areas. The snow will then become heavy at times between about 4 am and 7 am from west to east, then will change to rain in Central NJ about 8 am, NYC and Long Island around 9 am, and to freezing rain and sleet and then rain in East Central PA around 9-10 am, in Northern NJ between about 9-10 am, and in Southeastern NY State and Fairfield County, CT, around 10-11 am, but some freezing rain could hold on into the afternoon in the higher elevations of Northeastern PA.
Total possible snowfall accumulations prior to the changeover:
a coating to an inch or two: Central and Southern NJ (basically from Mercer and Middlesex County, southward, with the higher amounts more likely in Mercer and Middlesex Counties), in NYC, and on Long Island
2-5 inches: East Central and Northeastern PA, Northern NJ, Southeastern NY State and in Fairfield County, CT, (with the higher amounts most likely to occur in the higher elevations of Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, Orange and Putnam Counties in NY, and in Northern Fairfield County, CT)
The steady precipitation will end in the late morning or early afternoon, then there will be a chance of a rain shower. Lows will range from the mid to upper teens in Northeastern PA to the upper 20’s to low 30’s along the coast. Highs will rise through the day, reaching from the mid 40’s late at night in Northeastern PA to the mid to upper 50’s in Central NJ.
Sunday rain will be likely in the morning as a strong cold front moves through our area. Warm air will be surging northward into our area ahead of this front, causing temperatures to warm to the 50’s, to even some low 60’s in Central NJ early Sunday morning. Temperatures will then fall rapidly, reaching the 30’s by evening.
Monday then looks nice, but cold, with highs in the mid 20’s to low 30’s.
Tuesday will then be variably cloudy with a chance of a bit of rain or snow along the coast as a storm system develops just off shore. Highs will be in the low to mid 30’s inland and around 40 along the coast.
Wednesday then looks nice with highs in the upper 30’s to mid 40’s.
Next Thursday there will be a chance of rain or snow as a storm system approaches from the west. Highs will be in the 40’s.
Next Friday looks variably cloudy with a chance of a rain or snow shower. Highs will be in the upper 30’s to mid 40’s.
Christmas Eve then looks nice with highs in the upper 30’s to mid 40’s.
Christmas Day and next Monday then look variably cloudy with a chance of a rain or snow shower. Highs will be in the 40’s Christmas Day and the upper 30’s to mid 40’s next Monday.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday then look nice with highs in the 30’s.
