Sunday, October 29, 2017 - Morning Weather Discussion

Today is the 5th Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy...

Well, unfortunately, we all wake up to data that looks even worse this morning...

Superstorm Sandy hit in the evening 5 years ago today. It looks as if Philippe will hit about the same time tonight...

Tropical Storm Philippe and a strong cold front will team up to hit us hard tonight...

A strong Nor’easter will form along the Middle Atlantic Coast today as a Tropical Storm Philippe and a strong cold front combine. The center of the storm will track through Southern NJ and Eastern Pennsylvania. The heaviest rain will occur just to the west of the track of the center of low pressure, across parts of East Central and Northeastern PA, with the strongest winds to the east of the center of low pressure, across Central and Northern NJ, Southeastern NY State, NYC, Fairfield County, CT, and on Long Island.

It now appears that there are chances for wind gusts as high as 70 mph possible throughout our area tonight, with the potential of up to 80 mph wind gusts possible on Long Island, in Southern Westchester County in NY State, and in Southern Fairfield County, CT, tonight. These winds will cause some tree branches and trees to fall, causing some power outages.

The one thing I must mention is that sometimes the winds don’t become as strong as the data indicates. Sometimes the winds can be very strong above ground level, but don’t make it to the surface. What we will have to watch out for is whether any thunderstorms develop this evening. Thunderstorms will cause these winds to come to the surface. If we don’t get thunderstorms it is possible we could be saved from the highest of the winds. Let’s cross our fingers and hope.

Also, the rain is looking a touch worse with our entire area looking to get 2-4 inches, with up to 5 inches possible in parts of East Central and Northeastern PA. These rain amounts will cause some flooding.

So, Mother Nature is celebrating the 5th Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy with another dangerous storm. Of course, this will be nothing anywhere near the strength of Superstorm Sandy, but it will likely be one to remember.

Highs today will be in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s.

Tomorrow the rain will end in the morning, followed by clearing. Highs will be in the upper 40’s and 50’s.

Halloween will then be nice, but cool, with highs in the mid 40’s to mid 50’s.

Wednesday clouds will increase with a chance of a shower at night. Highs will be mid 40’s to mid 50’s.

Thursday and Friday will then be variably cloudy and warm with a chance of a shower as warm air surges northward into our area ahead of an approaching cold front. Highs will be in the 60’s to low 70’s.

Saturday through next Monday then look nice and cooler, with highs in the low to mid 50’s Saturday, the upper 40’s to mid 50’s Sunday, and the upper 50’s to mid 60’s Monday.

Next Tuesday there will be increasing cloudiness with a chance of a shower at night as a cold front approaches and then passes through our area. Highs will be in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s.

Next Wednesday through Saturday will be nice, but with increasing cloudiness next Saturday. Highs will be in the mid 50’s to low 60’s next Wednesday, the mid 40’s to low 50’s next Thursday, the upper 40’s to mid 50’s next Friday, and the upper 40’s to mid 50’s next Saturday.

Have a fantastic day!
