Monday, January 21, 2019 - Morning Weather Discussion

Very cold today/tomorrow then warm with rain Wednesday night and Thursday, and then a weekend Nor’easter looking likely…

If you have any weather related photos or videos you would like to share here on this blog, please forward them to edgeweather2@gmail.com with your name and town.

Below are some photos of the ice and snow yesterday morning in West Milford, Passaic County, NJ, submitted by Nancy L. Coleman Staubitz. Thanks Nancy!

It was amazingly cold this morning, in fact, it was the coldest temperature recorded at my location in three years, at -2, and then with the wind, it felt like -20, and the highs today will only reach the single digits to mid teens.

Tomorrow will then be mostly sunny and cold, with lows ranging from the low to mid single digits below zero in parts of Northeastern PA, Putnam County, NY, and Northern Fairfield County, CT, to the low to mid teens above zero along the NJ Coast and on Long Island, highs in the 20’s to low 30’s.

Wednesday, clouds will increase, with rain developing in the afternoon and evening as a cold front approaches from the west. It will be warmer, with highs in the upper 30’s to mid 40’s.

Thursday there will be rain, possibly heavy at times in the morning as a storm system develops along the front in the Southeastern United States and then moves northward along the front and through our area. It will be very warm, as warm air surges northward into our area with the storm. Highs will be in the upper 40’s and 50’s in the morning, dropping in the afternoon.

Friday will then be variably cloudy with a chance of a flurry. It will be colder behind the storm with highs in the 20’s to mid 30’s.

Friday into Saturday a disturbance will drop down from Alberta, Canada, reaching the Tennessee River Valley by Saturday night at the same time that another disturbance moves southeastward through the Rockies and Texas, reaching the Northern Gulf of Mexico, south of Louisiana by Saturday night. The disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico will likely explosively develop in the warm waters of the Gulf of the Mexico, heading eastward and reaching the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico by midday Sunday. It will then likely start to phase Sunday night with the disturbance that had dropped down from Canada, reaching the Tennessee River Valley. This will cause the storm to pull northward along the East Coast, reaching a point near Cape Hatteras, NC, late Sunday night, the Delmarva Coast next Monday morning, a point near the NJ Coast Monday afternoon, and then will turn more northeastward, reaching Eastern Long Island and Cape Cod Monday night, and Eastern Maine by late Monday night. Often these types of storms can become quite intense due to the warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, so we will want to keep a close eye on this situation. There will also be very cold air being pulled in to the northwest of this storm, so it is possible that snow could fall into the Deep South to the northwest of the track of the storm, possibly even as far south as the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and the Western Florida Panhandle.

If this all verifies it would mean increasing cloudiness with a chance of a snow shower Saturday. Highs would be in the mid teens to mid 20’s.

Next Sunday we will have a chance of rain or snow developing, depending on the exact track of the storm. It will also likely be windy, Right now, it looks most likely that there would be a chance of snow inland and rain or snow along the coast and on Long Island, but we will have to wait and see. Highs will be in the mid 20’s to mid 30’s.

Next Monday there will be a chance of rain or snow, with snow more likely inland, and it will also likely be windy, but again, it is dependent on the exact track of the storm. Highs will be in the 30’s.

Next Tuesday into Wednesday morning there will be a chance of rain or snow showers as a disturbance and cold front approach from the west and then pass through our area. Highs will be in the upper 20’s and 30’s next Tuesday, dropping to the mid teens to mid 20’s next Wednesday.

Next Thursday through Saturday then look nice with highs in the mid teens to mid 20’s next Thursday, the 20’s to low 30’s next Friday, and the mid 20’s to low 30’s next Saturday.

Next Sunday will then be variably cloudy with a chance of rain or snow showers as a disturbance may pass through our area. Highs will be in the 20’s to low 30’s.

Have a fantastic day!
