Monday, December 14, 2020 - Daily Weather Discussion

Accumulating snow for some of us today, blizzard potential exists for Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning, and then lows possibly reaching the mid-single digits in some inland locations Saturday morning…

For a full detailed look at the next two weeks, please look at my prior post titled, “Monday, December 14, 2020 – Look at the Next 2 Weeks”, and look at the post before that to view the various computer model snowfall maps for our area for today and Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning.

A disturbance will pass southeast of our area today, but will come close enough to our area to bring us some rain and snow that will end this evening.

Total possible snowfall accumulation for today:

Trace to an inch:  Central and Northeastern NJ, NYC, Western Long Island

One to three inches:  East Central and Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, Southeastern NY State, Fairfield County CT

The next disturbance of interest will be passing through the Rockies today and tonight and will enter the Central Great Plains tomorrow. As this disturbance moves eastward into the Southeastern United States  Wednesday morning, it will start drawing  moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. As this disturbance then approaches the East Coast Wednesday afternoon it will cause a Nor’easter to form near the Middle Atlantic Coast. This Nor’easter will then slowly move northeastward, drawing copious moisture from the Atlantic Ocean into the cold air in place in our area. The Nor’easter will be running into a strong high pressure area situated to our north over Quebec, Canada. The strong pressure gradient between the developing Nor’easter and the strong high pressure to our north will cause winds to gust as high as 50 mph inland and up to 60 mph along the coast and on Long Island. This may cause blizzard conditions in parts of our area and may also cause some coastal flooding. There could be a mixture of rain and snow along the Central NJ Coast and on far Southeastern Long Island, with heavy snow elsewhere. The strong winds could cause drifting of the snow.

Total possible snowfall accumulation:

Trace to 2 inches:  Southeastern NJ

2-12 inches:  Southwestern NJ, Coastal Central NJ from south to north

9-12 inches:  far Southeastern Long Island

12-18 inches with locally higher amounts possible:  Central NJ, NYC, Long Island (excluding far Southeastern Long Island)

14-24 inches with locally higher amounts possible:  East Central PA, Northern NJ, Southeastern NY State, Fairfield County, CT

After this it will get very cold heading into the weekend with lows possibly dropping as low as the mid-single digits Saturday morning in some inland locations.

It will then warm up heading into the Christmas holiday.
