Long Range Model for December through February
Many people have been asking me what the winter would be like. I did not commit to anything. I am getting ready to take a shot at it this morning. The latest data just came in from the long range model. They only run this model once a month. The latest run is now showing below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation in our area. This would obviously translate into above normal snowfall for our area. I definitely see this type of a pattern setting up in the shorter range models that I follow on a daily basis, so I believe it. I have noticed over the years that long range models actually do a pretty good job of forecasting an overall pattern for the winter, so it is probably correct. The next chance of snow will be on Friday night after that arctic cold front moves through and drops our temperatures to winter-like levels for next weekend, with another chance for some snow next Saturday night as a weak storm system approaches. Then we have to watch as a strong storm may form over the Southeastern United States. The track that this potential storm takes will make the difference between a lot of rain and a lot of snow for the time period just prior to Thanksgiving.
