Nor’easter to develop Thursday, could become a Blizzard for parts of Northern New England…

A Nor’easter will develop Thursday and could bring many parts of our area some snow Thursday and this storm may become a blizzard for parts of New England…

First though, today we will have a chance of a shower as a cold front moves through our area, but it will be very warm with highs in the 50’s in most places and even some low 60’s in Central NJ, NYC, and on Long Island.

Tomorrow should then be nice, but back to normal with the temperatures, with highs in the mid 30’s to low 40’s.

I have been talking about this possibility for about a week already and here it comes…

Thursday things will get very interesting as a disturbance in the Northern Jet Stream will combine with a disturbance in the Southern Jet Stream to form a Nor’easter near the Delmarva Peninsula around mid-day Thursday. This storm will intensify rapidly as it moves northeastward to a position near the Eastern end of Long Island Thursday evening and then to near the New Hampshire Coast late Thursday night. This will cause snow to develop in East Central and Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, Orange, Putnam, Northern Rockland, and Northern Westchester Counties in NY, and Northern Fairfield County in CT, rain or very wet snow to develop in Central and Northeastern NJ, NYC, on Western Long Island and in Southern Fairfield County, CT, and then gradually changing to snow, and rain to develop on Eastern Long Island.

The precipitation should start between about 8 am and 11 am from west to east across the Allentown and New York City Metropolitan areas, the precipitation may become heavy at times in the afternoon and early evening. Snowfall accumulation is a possibility in East Central and Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, Southeastern NY State and in Fairfield County, CT (away from the coast), and it could be significant in parts of these areas, especially in Orange and Putnam Counties in NY and in Northern Fairfield County, CT. Snowfall accumulation further south and east still remains a possibility depending on how quickly this storm develops, so please check back for updates this afternoon and evening. Lows Thursday morning will be in the mid 20’s to low 30’s, with highs in the mid 30’s in East Central and Northeastern PA, Northwestern NJ, and Orange and Putnam Counties in NY, the upper 30’s to low 40’s Northeastern NJ, Rockland and Westchester Counties in NY, and in Fairfield County, CT, the upper 30’s to mid 40’s in Central NJ, the low to mid 40’s in NYC, and the mid to upper 40’s along the NJ Coast and on Long Island.

Further north in New England, this storm is likely to attain blizzard strength, with snowfall amounts of 6 inches possible as far south as parts of Orange and Putnam Counties in NY and Northern Fairfield County, CT, as far west as all of Eastern New York State, except possibly Rockland and Westchester Counties, and then Northeastward through Northwestern CT, the Western half of Massachusetts, through Southeastern New Hampshire, and all of Maine, except coastal areas. Within this larger area, there will be a large area with 1-2 foot snowfall amounts from Western Massachusetts through most of Vermont (except possibly far Northwestern Vermont near Burlington where amounts may be 6-12 inches), through most of New Hampshire except far Southeastern NH, and most of Maine away from the coast. Winds could also gust to up to 50 mph in parts of this area with the heavy snow, likely causing blizzard conditions at times.

So, please, if you are in New England, are planning a trip there, or know someone there, tell them to prepare for this storm!

There remains a chance that this storm could strengthen a bit more rapidly than currently projected, which would increase the chance for more snow as far south as the Allentown and New York City Metropolitan areas, so please be sure to check back for updates this afternoon and evening.

Friday will then be variably cloudy with a chance of a Lake Effect snow shower. Highs will be in the 30’s.

New Year’s Eve will be variably cloudy with a chance of a snow shower in the afternoon or at night. Highs will be in the 40’s to low 50’s.

Monday, we will have a chance of rain, snow, freezing rain, sleet, or snow in the morning, changing to rain. Highs will be in the 40’s to low 50’s.

Next Tuesday we will have a chance of rain ending in the morning, followed by clearing. It will be warm, with highs in the 50’s to low 60’s.

Next Wednesday and Thursday then look nice with highs in the mid 30’s to low 40’s next Wednesday and the mid 20’s to low 30’s next Thursday.

Next Friday we will have increasing cloudiness with a chance of snow developing as a disturbance approaches from the west. Highs will be in the mid 20’s to low 30’s.

Next Saturday we will have a chance of snow with highs in the mid 20’s to low 30’s.

Next Sunday and Monday then look nice with highs in the mid 20’s to low 30’s.
