Wednesday, December 14, 2016 - Morning Weather Discussion

VERY COLD, then snow likely Saturday morning…

We will have one more day of decent temperatures around here today with highs ranging from around 30 in Northeastern PA to the low 40’s along the coast, in NYC and on Long Island.

Tomorrow will then be variably cloudy and MUCH colder with a chance of a snow shower, especially along the coast. A coating of accumulation will be possible along the coast, in NYC, and on Long Island as there will be some Ocean Effect snow showers in those areas. Highs will range from the mid to upper teens in Northeastern PA to the mid 20’s in Central NJ and on Long Island.

Friday will then be mostly sunny, but it will still be cold and there will be increasing cloudiness late in the day. Highs will range from around 20 in Northeastern PA to the mid 20’s in Central NJ.

Saturday, very warm air will start to move northward into the very cold air in our area. This will cause snow to develop between about midnight and 3 am from west to east across the Allentown and New York City Metropolitan areas. The snow will become heavy at times between about 4 am and 7 am from west to east. The snow will then change to rain in Central NJ about 8 am, NYC and Long Island around 9 am, and to freezing rain and sleet and then rain in East Central PA around 9-10 am, in Northern NJ between about 9-10 am, and in Southeastern NY State and Fairfield County, CT, around 10-11 am. Some freezing rain could hold on into the afternoon in the higher elevations of Northeastern PA.

Total possible snowfall accumulations prior to the changeover: 

Coating to an inch or two: Central and Southern NJ (basically from Mercer and Middlesex County, southward, with the higher amounts more likely in Mercer and Middlesex Counties), in NYC, and on Long Island

2-5 inches:  East Central and Northeastern PA, Northern NJ, Southeastern NY State and in Fairfield County, CT

Lows will range from the mid to upper teens in Northeastern PA to the upper 20’s to low 30’s along the coast, with highs rising through the day, reaching from the mid 40’s late at night in Northeastern PA to the mid to upper 50’s in Central NJ.

Sunday a strong cold front will then move through our area, bringing us some rain in the morning and temperatures falling through the day. Early morning pre-dawn highs will range from the mid 40’s in Northeastern PA to the upper 50’s to low 60’s in Central NJ, falling through the day to the 30’s by evening in most locations.

There will be a slight chance of a low pressure area developing along the front over the Southeastern United States and then riding up the front and through our area Sunday night. If by any chance this were to occur it would bring our area some snow Sunday night, but right now there is only a slight chance of this happening. 

Monday will then be variably cloudy, with a slight chance of snow ending in the morning, if by any chance the storm does develop along the front. It will be cold with highs in the 20’s.

Tuesday and next Wednesday then look nice with highs in the mid 20’s to low 30’s Tuesday and the 30’s next Wednesday.

Next Thursday there will be a chance of rain or snow as a storm system and cold front approach from the west. Highs will be in the 40’s.

Next Friday and Christmas Eve then look nice with highs in the 40’s next Friday and the upper 30’s to mid 40’s Christmas Eve.

Christmas Day and next Monday look to be variably cloudy with a chance of rain or snow shower. Highs will be in the upper 30’s to mid 40’s.

Next Tuesday then looks nice with highs in the 30’s.
