Wednesday, December 23, 2020 - Daily Weather Discussion

Heavy flooding rain and strong winds could bring some problems Christmas Eve into Christmas Morning…

The approaching cold front could not come at a worse time. The cold front is quite strong and will cause warm air to surge northward into our area tomorrow, causing highs to break 60 degrees in parts of our area tomorrow afternoon and night, prior to the cold front passing through Christmas morning to mid-day.  There will be heavy rain as the warm and moist air surges into our area ahead of the front, and the sharp temperature gradient will cause strong winds that could gust as high as 55 mph inland and 65 mph along the coast and on Long Island. Rainfall amounts will range mainly from an inch to 4 inches throughout our area, with the highest amounts in the highest elevations of Northeastern PA and the next highest amounts in the higher elevations of Northern NJ, Southeastern NY State at and Fairfield County, CT.

The combination of high winds and heavy rain will likely cause some trees and tree limbs to come down, causing power outages in parts of our area. Not particularly good news for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Before all this starts it will however be nice today with highs in the mid 30’s to low 40’s.

The rain will start in the morning tomorrow in East Central and Northeastern PA, then in the afternoon and early evening in Central and Northern NJ, Southeastern NY State, NYC, and on Fairfield County, CT, and at night in Long Island. The rain will become heavy at times at night. It will also become windy at night with gusts up to 55 mph inland and 65 mph along the coast and on Long Island. It will be warm with highs in the 50’s to low 60’s.

Christmas Day the rain will end from the west, with a snow shower or flurry in Northeastern PA at night. It will be very windy early in the morning with gusts of up to 55 mph inland and up to 65 mph along the coast and on Long Island, then subsiding. Highs will be early in the morning in the mid 50’s to low 60’s, then dropping rapidly to the mid 30’s to low 50’s in the afternoon.

Saturday and Sunday will then be mostly sunny, bust much colder Saturday with highs in the mid 20’s to mid 30’s, then rising to the mid to upper 30’s Sunday.

Monday will be variably cloudy with a chance of a shower as a weak disturbance and cold front passes through our area. Highs will be in the 40’s.

Tuesday and next Wednesday, December 30th, are then looking nice with highs in the 30’s to low 40’s Tuesday and the low to mid 30’s next Wednesday.

New Year’s Eve there will be a chance of rain as a strong disturbance approaches our area. Highs will be in the 40’s.

New Year’s Day there will be a chance of rain ending early in the morning, then it will be variably cloudy with a chance of a snow shower or flurry at night as the disturbance and then cold front pass through our area. Highs will be in the 40’s.

Next Saturday, January 2nd and next Sunday, January 3rd, are then looking nice with highs in the mid 30’s to low 40’s next Saturday and the 30’s next Sunday.

Next Monday, January 4th, there will be a chance of rain or snow as a disturbance may pass through our area. Highs will be in the mid 30’s to low 40’s.
