The latest run of the short-range American model that just came out now indicates that up to 1 inch of rain could fall in parts of Northwest New Jersey overnight. While this would not usually cause flooding problems, the ground is so saturated that this might cause some flooding problems in parts of Northwest New Jersey tonight and tomorrow morning. Due to this possibility the National Weather Service has just issued a Special Weather Statement for those areas.

Organized Area of Rain Just Developed
An organized area of steady to locally heavy rain has developed across Northern New Jersey, resulting in a Special Weather Statement by the National Weather Service for the possibility of rising streams and ponding on roadways. This area should move through over the next few hours and is not expected to lead to flooding but it would not take much rain at this point to cause flooding, so this will need to be watched closely.

On and Off Rain Through Tuesday, Then Finally Some Nice Weather
We have a few more days of rainy, cool, weather as a slow moving upper level low has dropped down from Canada and moves very slowly through our area. Fortunately, the rain will be of a scattered nature, so there will most likely not be any flooding concerns. Rainy Through Tuesday, Then Finally Some Sun, Hopefully Anyway
It looks like the European model was wrong on its run this morning and the coastal low will indeed move out of our area on Tuesday night, clearing things out starting on Wednesday next week. Of course we will have to get through the next 4 raining days before seeing some nice weather again, as a strong upper level low will drop down into our area from Canada and stall out until Tuesday night, bringing some rain each day through Tuesday. The rain should not be too heavy at any time though so the chances of flooding are low.
Friday Evening's Look at the Next 10 Days

Probably No Snow, But Will It be Sunny Next Week or Will There Be SEVERE Flooding Next Week?
Well, we probably won’t get any snow any longer this weekend as the upper level low may move further south than originally thought, although the possibility is not completely gone, it is less likely than it looked before, although Central Pennsylvania may still get some snow this weekend. The threat now turns to the possibility of flooding rains this coming week if the European model is correct, but I must mention that the American model does not have this threat at all, and just has sunny skies for us next week. The reason for the difference between the models is that the European model takes the upper level lower further south and removes our threat of wet snow in the higher terrain. Instead, it brings it south of us and off the Middle Atlantic Coast, producing a strong coastal storm that would stall out and bring heavy rains to Northern New Jersey for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and lingering rains through next weekend. The American model does not do this at all and instead moves the upper level low out to sea on Monday. It is too early to tell which model is right, so for now, I will just put the chance of rain into the forecast for next week, but stay tuned because if the European model is wrong, it will be sunny next week instead. Of course, if it were right it would mean 3-5 inches of rain next week with SEVERE flooding. So, stay tuned!
Probably No Snow But Severe Flooding Rains Now?
TODAY – sunny in the morning, mostly sunny in the afternoon, and showers developing at night, high in the middle 70’s
TOMORROW – showers and thunderstorms, low in the lower to middle 50’s, high in the lower to middle 60’s
SUNDAY – chance of showers, low in the upper 40’s to lower 50’s, high in the upper 50’s to lower 60’s

Strong Thunderstorms are Starting to Develop Throughout Northern New Jersy
Strong thunderstorms have started developing throughout Northern New Jersey and will continue to develop the rest of the day. The thunderstorms will be severe in some locations with strong winds, frequent cloud to ground lightening and heavy rains. Some flooding is almost certain to occur as the ground is extremely saturated from earlier rains.
More Flooding Likely Today - Then a Chance of Snow on Sunday Night?
There was an inch of rain again in Northwest New Jersey overnight and there could be another inch of rain again today as showers and thunderstorms, possibly heavy, will likely develop again this afternoon, prior to clearing out tomorrow morning. The streams and rivers are already at very high levels in Northwest New Jersey, so any additional rain could produce flooding, which could be severe in some locations. Tomorrow morning and early afternoon the weather should be ok and there could even be some sun if we are lucky, and then showers and thunderstorms will develop again as the cold front finally approaches on Friday night. After the front passes on Friday night, the weather will become much cooler for the weekend, but it may not clear out much as an upper level low will drop down into our area from Canada. This upper level low will bring MUCH COOLER air with it for the weekend and very cold air high up in the atmosphere, which will produce instability in the atmosphere and therefore the possibility of showers and thunderstorms all weekend as it moves slowly through our area. As the upper level low is directly over Northern New Jersey on Sunday night it could make it cold enough in the upper levels of the atmosphere to produce a mixture of rain and wet snow in the higher terrain of Northern New Jersey on Sunday night. This would be a novelty feature and would certainly not produce any problems for anyone. It is just an interesting possibility. My wife reminded me that two years ago we did actually have accumulating snow here on grassy surfaces in Northwest New Jersey on September 30, so this is unusual, but not unheard of.
Thursday Morning's Look at the Next 10 Days - Chance of More Flooding Today and a Chance of Some Snow on Sunday Night?

Lots of Interesting Weather Possibilites - Even a Chance of Some Wet Snow?
There was very heavy rain early this morning in Northwest New Jersey producing some localized flooding and many car accidents. There will be another chance of some heavier showers and thunderstorms later today. Tomorrow morning there will likely be some very heavy showers and thunderstorms, which could lead to some small stream flooding. Friday it will clear out as the cold front finally comes through and brings much cooler air with it. This is when things could get a little interesting as an upper level low pressure area will drop down from Canada with some unseasonably cold air. This unseasonably cold air will produce instability in the atmosphere, which will cause showers and thunderstorms to develop, which could produce some wet snow underneath the exact path of the upper level low, which right now would be through Western and Central Pennsylvania. It is remotely possible that some wet snowflakes could mix in with any showers that linger into Sunday night over the upper elevations of Northwest New Jersey, depending on the exact path that the upper level low takes. If this were to occur there would certainly not be any chance of accumulation as the air temperatures will be well above freezing. This would be possible because the upper level low will have very cold air with it in the upper layers of the atmosphere, even though temperatures will be well above freezing at the surface. It is an interesting possibility but it would not be a problem in any way.

Rainy Workweek, Cold Weekend with small chance of Rain and Wet Snow?
Showers and thunderstorms may develop this afternoon, and then there will be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. Thursday the showers and thunderstorms will continue and will likely become heavy. Friday it will start to clear out as a strong cold front moves through Northern New Jersey and brings much colder air for the weekend. Then things could get a little interesting as a coastal storm might develop off the coast of New Jersey on Sunday or Monday, which would pull even more cold air down from Canada and moisture in off the Atlantic Ocean. If this were to occur steady rains could develop at some point on Sunday afternoon or evening and continue into Monday, with a small possibility that higher elevations in Northern New Jersey could even see a mix with some wet snowflakes - welcome to October. If this were to happen, it would be the earliest I have ever seen snow in Northern New Jersey. Again, this has a very small chance of happening, but it is an interesting possibility.

Rainy and Warm Workweek, Cool and Dry Next Weekend
Today and tomorrow there will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms and it will be warm with highs in the upper 70’s to near 80. A cold from will start to approach the area toward the end of the week and as the front gets closer the showers and thunderstorms will become more prevalent on Tuesday and of greater intensity as well on Wednesday and Thursday. There is a chance of some heavy rains, in the 1-2 inch range on Wednesday and Thursday, which could cause some flooding, although it does not appear to be a serious situation. The cold front will finally pass through Northern New Jersey on Friday night drying things out but also cooling things down substantially, with lows next weekend in the upper 30’s to middle 40’s and highs only in the middle to upper 50’s.
